In collaboration with Graziher Magazine, our Spring Collection was brought to life by photographer Ashleigh Clarke and her three-generation farming family on their sugar cane property ‘Dunoon Farms’ in North Queensland. For over 100 years, The Clarke Family have had their flag firmly staked in the idyllic Proserpine valley. With the Whitsunday coastline lapping the property, the appeal of their coveted ‘bush to beach’ lifestyle is not lost on this pioneering family, with all three generations now living back on the farm. With a cheeky wit and memory that vastly belie his 91 years, Ashleigh's grandfather, Mitch Clarke, was one of the pioneers of cane farming in the region and has spent his lifetime on the farm - still contributing where he can. From hand-cutting cane and using draught horses to prepare and cart the crop, to the mechanical and technological advancements accelerating cane farming efficiency and capacity, Mitch has lived through it all.
“When I’m in the field having a whinge he loves to tell us how easy we have it, compared to back in his day, but it usually falls on deaf ears!” laughs Ashleigh.
Unfortunately, the recent pandemic has ravaged the region’s tourism sector, Ashleigh’s business included, however, she’s grateful to have work on the farm as an option. Her father, Glenn, is also philosophical about recent events, and how, despite the region’s strong tourism sector, farming remains vital to the local economy.
“Growing cane is a primary industry, and global events such as this really emphasises that agriculture is here through thick and thin – so many industries have fallen over due to Covid-19, but it just goes to show agriculture is here for the long haul.”
Much like, it seems, are the Clarkes, a family deeply ingrained in the Proserpine region, with a legacy rich in history, and future full of youth and enthusiasm.
Designed to endure life on the land with a focus on long-lasting, easy-care qualities, our range of casual and workwear essentials are sure to be loved by the whole family.
